Joint Protectors are not a necessity, but they certainly help protect some of the vital surfaces of your cue. They also keep dirt and chalk from fouling up your shaft threads and protect the Joint Pin threads from accidental damage if the butt is dropped or bumped when no shaft is attached. One final benefit is JP's will eliminate any possible damage to the inside of your expense case by covering the exposed sharp surface of your cue's joint pin (no lining tears, or holes being poked into case bottoms or tops).
